British Foreign Office has placed 11 new nations to its official advisory roster about the risks of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted alcoholic drinks.

The expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a global increase in the number of reported cases" of methanol toxicity.

Only a few weeks ago, the government had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to multiple serious incidents like the tragic loss of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that as little as small amounts of toxic alcohol can cause vision loss or death within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol commonly used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not intended for drinking.

Although it is naturally produced during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for ingestion through the refining procedure.

However in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to save money, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.

Authorities' Guidance for Travellers

Foreign Office representative Hamish Falconer emphasized that all travellers should be aware of the symptoms of industrial alcohol poisoning.

"When you are having drinks overseas, choose trusted places and avoid local brews or complimentary drinks," the minister advised.

"If something feels off, such as a fatigue that's far more intense than normal or sight issues – contact a doctor immediately."

The complete register of countries listed as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
