Trump and Japanese New Premier Share Compliments and Vow to Reinforce ‘Extraordinary’ Relationship

In the course of a latest trip to Japan's capital, ex- American leader Donald Trump and Japan's new Premier Sanae Takaichi shared friendly praise and pledged to strengthen the currently robust bilateral ties.

Highlights from the Meeting

Trump praised Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘exceptional’ figure and congratulated her on assuming the role of the nation's inaugural female prime minister. During their talks at Tokyo's Akasaka Palace, Trump expressed confidence that she would become one of the ‘outstanding leaders’ of Japan.

Takaichi, who is a protégée of former Japanese leader Abe, praised his efforts to resolve international disputes and reportedly pledged to put forward him for the prestigious award.

Trade and Defense Deals

The two governments announced a list of collaborative projects in areas such as power, AI, and rare earths. Japanese companies are exploring funding of up to $400 billion in the United States.

Additionally, Japan had previously pledged $550 billion in long-term US investments, loans, and guarantees as part of an arrangement to obtain exemption from the former president's import duties.

These moves are viewed as possibly reducing any future demands from the US side for Tokyo to increase its military expenditure. Takaichi responded to this by promising to fast-track plans to increase defense spending to two percent of gross domestic product.
